Relaxation and guided imagery for people living with cancer
Cancer and its treatments can be stressful for both patients and their loved ones.
Emotional distress associated with a cancer diagnosis and treatment can lead to a diminished quality of life, poor health behaviors, and can even compromise the immune system, which in turn may affect survival or recurrence.
The effectiveness of Relaxation training and Guided Imagery has been increasingly established by research to have a positive impact on health, including immune function in cancer patients.
Research suggests that cancer patients who practice these methods experience:
- Improved mood, sense of well-being and immune function
- Decreased anxiety and depression, emotional distress, sleep disturbance, pain and fatigue
- Reduced treatment side effects
- A calmer mind and feeling of greater equanimity during experience with cancer
