Name Change for Area's Largest Health Care Provider Announced.
Expanding services, advanced technology, physical plant growth and a service area constantly evolving are just a few of the reasons the leadership of Craven Regional Medical Center has decided it is time for an update of its identity throughout the region.
“Our Medical Center has experienced phenomenal growth since we began serving this area as Craven County Hospital in 1962. We are much more than a hospital now, we are a health care system and the reach of our services extends beyond Craven County,” explained Ray Leggett, President and CEO.
The 350 bed acute-care hospital at the center of the organization will now be known as CarolinaEast Medical Center and will serve as the flagship component of the larger multi-facility and service entity, CarolinaEast Health System.
“We recognize this is a large undertaking but feel it is important that our image and identity accurately define who we are and what we mean to our service area,” said Leggett.
The organization’s Board of Directors fully supports the change. “It is time,” said Lonnie Pridgen, Chairman of the Board. “We are the leading health care provider for all of the Coastal Carolina region. Our image must reflect that,” he stressed.
While the name has changed, Leggett assures that much will remain the same. “We are still locally owned and locally governed,” said Leggett. “We belong to the people of coastal North Carolina,” he added.
In addition to the Medical Center, the CarolinaEast Health System is comprised of a diagnostic center, a surgery center, a home health agency, an inpatient and outpatient mental health service, a primary care practice in Vanceboro, a cardiology practice in New Bern and Morehead City, and a rehabilitation hospital. Cancer care, heart care, women’s care, pediatric care, surgical care, orthopedic care and emergency care are among the organization’s areas of excellence.
“The constant expansion of the breadth of our services demanded that we take this step forward,” said Leggett. “The ‘Craven Regional Medical Center’ tag just didn’t fit anymore.”
The transition will be gradual. “While you will see some of the change immediately through logo re-design and marketing initiatives, the changes that must be made from medical record reformatting, replacing all employee badges, modifying contracts to repainting our ambulances will be quite a complex task. We want to make sure we make this transition as efficient, effective and accurately as possible,” said Megan McGarvey, Director of Public Relations.

Craven Regional Medical Center will now be known as CarolinaEast Medical Center. The 350 bed acute care hospital will be considered the flagship of the newly named CarolinaEast Health System.
Since opening our doors in 1962, we have grown from a 100 bed county hospital to a multi-facility and multi-service health care provider serving the entire Coastal Carolina region. These expanding services, our advanced technology, the physical plant growth and a constantly evolving service area are just a few of the reasons for the identity update. The name “Craven Regional Medical Center” just doesn’t fit anymore. We want to insure that our identity accurately defines who we are and what we mean to our service area, how far we have come and our future course.
Why a “System?”
We are much more than just a hospital and our service area extends beyond the borders of Craven County. In addition to the 350 bed medical center, at this time, our “System” is comprised of a diagnostic center, a surgery center, a home health agency, an inpatient and outpatient mental health service, a primary care practice in Vanceboro, a cardiology practice with offices in New Bern and Morehead City and a rehabilitation hospital. Heart care, cancer care, women’s care, orthopedic care, pediatric care and emergency care are among the organization’s areas of excellence.
The transition will be gradual. While some changes will take place immediately such as logo redesign, signage and various marketing initiatives, other changes will be made over a period of time. This will take the support and involvement of the entire organization. Every one of our employees, physicians and volunteers are an important part of our image and we want them to be involved. While the name has changed, much remains the same. The organization which belongs to the people of coastal North Carolina, remains locally owned and locally governed.
