NEW BERN, NC - On Thursday, May 30, 2012, NC Commissioner of Labor,
Cherie Berry, presented CarolinaEast Health System with eleven Gold Awards for
Safety for the 2011 calendar year. The NC Department of Labor Safety Awards
Program recognizes private and public organizations that achieve and maintain
outstanding safety records. The goal of the program is to promote efforts to
increase workplace safety and accident prevention methods.
The annual awards program includes two levels, gold and silver.
Qualifications for the Gold Level (the level received by all CarolinaEast
winners) include having had no fatalities during the calendar year for which
the award is being given and having maintained an “incidence rate” of at least
50% below the industry average. That rate is determined using the number of lost
work days, job transfers and restricted duty days for the year in question.
Gold Safety awards went to the following CarolinaEast facilities:
1st Year Gold Award:
CarolinaEast Medical Center
CarolinaEast Home
Health & CAP Case Management
CarolinaEast
Internal Medicine - Pollocksville

Internal Medicine – Cape Carteret

3rd Year Gold

Heart Center – New Bern
CarolinaEast
Heart Center – Morehead City
CarolinaEast
Surgery Center
8th Year Gold

“These awards are really quite an accomplishment,” said Raymond
Leggett, President and CEO of CarolinaEast Health System. “North Carolina ranks
in the top five in the nation in worker safety, so to be recognized among some
of the best of the best is really something to be proud of.”
This year is the first time that CarolinaEast Medical Center has
received a Safety Award from the NC Department of Labor. For many of the
facilities listed above, the incidence rate (of days lost, job transfers, etc)
was zero. Facilities who win consecutive awards continue to count up the years,
but if they are disqualified for one year they must begin again at 1st
year status.
“It is nice to know that our community has a place where employees come
to work every day with a strong commitment to the safety of everyone who comes
into our facilities – staff, patients and visitors alike,” Leggett said.
